Podcast #40 - Like, This One’s … Umm, Not Lame

Hollywood Rocks the Mic
Hollywood rocks the mic at the Grandstay Criterium.

Frye and Homme fly in the missing man formation as Rookie catches up on some beauty rest and tries to recover from his mountain bike adventure.

We discuss stuff and introduce a new segment called “Let’s Ask Homme”. We’d love to hear your thoughts on this week’s subject.

Race Distance

One aspect of local racing that I’ve always thought would enhance the overall scene is making a slight change to the race distances. I believe all categories would benefit from an adjustment, but I want to first focus on the Men 1/2 since that is where I race. My proposal is not for the local or national federation to enforce, but for promoters to see the benefits and adopt it at their own free will. […]

ROY is Good Peeps

What’s all the fuss about the Rider of the Year (ROY) competition?  It’s pretty simple – create a series to get the competitive juices flowing and attract top talent and large fields.   Seems everyone has an opinion on the need for ROY, the relevance, the success, having ROY winners for many categories, etc.  Have your […]

Lying Liars

There seems to be a strange phenomenon in the bike racing community. No it’s not the unabashed smarminess, the haters, or fixed gear fever. Oh, this virus is more prevalent than deep dish carbon rims. It’s the prolific lying. The lying I’m talking about focuses on performance related lies. Sure, call it stretching the truth or avoiding full disclosure but it’s lying nonetheless.

The Road is the Goal

Due to the bitterly cold temps and snowy entry into the winter season many dedicated cyclists in these parts have already begun to relegate themselves to doing the bulk of their riding on the trainer. The training tips are being scoured for that one element missing from their training plans, the basement cycling station is being pulled together, the rollers are down, pro cycling DVDs and tapes are at the ready, and The Cyclist’s Training Bible is being studied. All in anticipation of the long, pathetic, arduous hours that will be spent training indoors until winter releases its hold.

Campy Sucks!! (Part 2)

I have to say I’ve always loved the anatomics of the shifters. They were able to maintain a traditional shifter look and incorporate an albeit bastardized 10 speed ergo shifting system that falls way shy of Shimano’s shifting ability. The lead cable heads on campy shift cables are a mouse whisker smaller than a Shimano one. So if you install a Shimano cable it becomes a permanent part of the $300 shifter. The cable housing is stiff and is meant to run tight to the ergo bars. The cables and housing make sharp turns immediately after leaving the shifter.

2008 MCF Preliminary Road Calender: The Crits

At the December Minnesota Cycling Federation meeting the preliminary calendar was released. Utilizing the same procedures as in years past, the MCF awarded the preliminary dates to the promoters who had previously promoted an event on that date. However, clubs that failed to promote an event on that date this past season “lose” the rights to that date for future events unless no other event is in place to fill the void. Although this process has some flaws, it works for the most part and working from that rough template we now have a preliminary calendar that we discuss in this article.

Roy, What is it Good For?

First off, let me get some disclosures off my chest.

  1. I have not, and will not ever be competitive in the ROY competition, regardless of how it is structured.
  2. My opinion does not imply disrespect to those who work to compile the scores, determine the structure, or promote the races in the ROY series.
  3. My motive is strictly to humor myself. If I was really that interested, I would sponsor a “Mr. and Miss Minnesota Cyclist of the Year, presented by BikeThrow.com” …hmmm.

MN Cycling in 2008: Plotting a season for success?

With the Cyclocross State Championships behind us, the season here in Minnesota has officially ended.

As this season closes behind us, it is already time to begin thinking ahead towards 2008. More specifically, it is time to review how well the 2007 cycling calendar worked, and to the improvements we can make to it.

Catholics vs. Protestants

Actually, that title is slightly misleading - what I’m actually talking about is USCF vs. WISPORT.  For as many years as my cycling memory goes, this battle has been waged with each side claiming to have moral high ground.  From listening to partisans on both sides, you would think there are two completely different schools […]
